West Virginia Legislative Auditor

About the Role:

The West Virginia Legislature is seeking a highly qualified and experienced individual to serve as the Legislative Auditor. This critical role involves overseeing the auditing and evaluation of state government operations to ensure accountability, efficiency, and transparency. The Legislative Auditor will provide objective analysis and recommendations to the Joint Committee on Government and Finance.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Direct and manage the Office of the Legislative Auditor, including planning, organizing, and executing audits and evaluations of state agencies and programs.
  • Develop and implement audit plans, policies, and procedures in accordance with professional standards and legislative mandates.
  • Prepare and present comprehensive audit reports to the Joint Committee on Government and Finance, highlighting findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
  • Oversee financial, compliance, performance, and information technology audits to assess the effectiveness of state operations and the use of public funds.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and standards.
  • Lead a team of auditors, providing supervision, training, and professional development.
  • Collaborate with state agencies, legislative members, and other stakeholders to facilitate the audit process and address audit findings.
  • Stay current on developments in the auditing profession and relevant legislation to continuously improve the audit function.

 

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Public Administration, or a related field.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), or similar professional certification.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in auditing, accounting, or financial management, with at least 5 years in a supervisory or leadership role.
  • Extensive knowledge of government auditing standards and practices.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • High ethical standards and integrity.
